Welcome to First Grade

Mrs. Hankins' Classroom

Education has always been an important part of my life.  As a child, I enjoyed going to school and being part of many great classrooms.  My father also held many roles in education and helped to mold my ideas and values in education.  I attended Emporia State University to get my degree.  After graduating I worked for the Topeka public school system and was able to work in different classrooms.  Later, my husband I moved to this area.  I have had the opportunity to sub in the Winfield school district and teach in the Wichita (Pre-School), Derby (First and Second Grade) and Mulvane (Pre-School and First Grade) schools.  Each new place taught me new things and areas to work on in my teaching profession.  My husband and I have three wonderful children who are each busy in their stage of life.  Family along with education is an important part of my life. We enjoy spending time together when we have down time from school and sports.

Living and working in Mulvane has been very rewarding.  I enjoy helping the students of our community learn more about the environment around them.  In our classroom, we learn through small and large group activities.  I like to keep them busy learning and growing each day.  We do sprinkle in as much fun as we are able and still stay with our curriculum.  Reading is an important part of first grade.  We spend quite a bit of time and energy working to improve our skills.  It is great to see the excitement in a student's face as they see that they are able to read.  We also work on math using smaller groups so that needs are being met at the student's level.  We also work on many social aspects so that we are able to work and play together in and out of the classroom.  The students are able to go to specials each day.  They go to Music, PE, Art, Library, and Rotations. First grade is busy!

I feel that it is important to work with the parents and adults that are caring for the students each day.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  My email is jhankins@usd263.org.
